BASE Mechanical Design

The simplest BASE electronics box is a 4-slot design made from CNC-milled pieces of aluminium. The various pieces have an allodyne surface finish, and are held together with screws.  A more complex box was built for the 10-slot IMACS array (see photo here).

A backplane board fits into the back cavity and is screwed onto the sides of the box. The four main circuit boards fit into slots in the walls of the electronics box, and slide into the backplane.

Each wire of the signal cable is soldered into a via/hole in the backplane.  The other end of the signal cable is a 79-pin connector.  There are two additional connectors for power (3-pin), and a shutter output (BNC).

A mechanical model/drawing of the housing is here (.stp format).
