The manpower requirements for the IMACS instrument currently exceed the available staffing at OCIW, if the project is to be completed on a 2 1/2 - 3 year schedule. The current project team includes:
Additional staffing in the areas of software, mechanical design, mechanical fabrication and assembly, and electrical design and fabrication are clearly needed.
There are 10,000 hours of mechanical engineering in the project schedule estimate, and the addition of at least one full-time mechanical engineer will be required. Additional mechanical engineering and drafting will be pursued through consultants, contractors, and temporary services.
The two man-years estimated for electronics design and fabrication (not including the CCD detector system) will require either a new hire or a substantial amount of consultant time. However, the electronics tasks are both smaller in scope and less clearly defined than the mechanical tasks, and hence the resolution of staffing requirements for electronics is less urgent.
There are about two man-years of software effort currently estimated. As the software tasks become more clearly defined, the software manpower requirements are likely to increase. However, additional staffing, either through a new hire or consultants, can be deferred until the mechanical and electronic tasks are under way.
