1. Introduction

WIRC, the wide field infrared camera, contains four 1024 x 1024 Hawaii HgCdTe arrays mounted in a common focal plane. The gap between the arrays is 0.87 of an array dimension. The instrument is perated at the Cassegrain focus of the du Pont telescope.

The camera operates from 1.0-2.3 microns, i.e. in the 1.0, J, H, and Ks filter bands. A fast tip-tilt subsystem delivers image quality as good as 0.4" FWHM. A 13' x 13' field can be mapped in four pointings stepped so as to fill the gaps in the 2 x 2 detector array. Telescope and camera control software has been developed to allow for efficient mapping of substantial areas with this camera.

1.1 Detector Parameters

The WIRC dewar houses four Rockwell 1024 x 1024 pixel HgCdTe arrays. The pixel size is 18.5 microns, which gives a scale of 0.196" per pixel and a linear dimension of 201" x 201" for each array at the Cassegrain focus of the 100-inch telescope. The active area of each array is 18.944 x 18.944 mm, and the (nominal) detector spacing is 16.5 mm (892 pixels). The orientation on the sky of the four chips is illustrated in Figure 1.1 .

1.2 The WIRC Control System

The camera is operated by the Control System electronics and software. The electronics are mounted on the telescope next to the dewar, and in a rack which is located in the dome on the main observing floor. The data acquisition system consists of three computers:

These computers are all on a local network switch and by being so isolated, their network performance is not affected by general LAN traffic.

ARACHNE is the main control computer for the system. All control of the camera, guiding functions and telescope control occurs through a variety of Windows tasks run on ARACHNE. ARACHNE is a dual monitor machine (multiheaded) to facilitate the display of these control windows.

PALAS is dedicated to array readout and runs autonomously under control of ARACHNE. All functions of PALAS should be transparent to the observer including bootup. The only required visitor interaction with PALAS would be to verify that it is up and running in case there is a problem with the system.

RIGEL is an Observatory standard Mac Mini with a variety of popular tools such as IRAF, DS9, etc. useful for data reduction. Completed image frames in FITS format are streamed onto RIGEL from PALAS during the observing for analysis and processing by IRAF.

In a typical scenario with two observers, one will control the camera by sitting in front of the two monitors and keyboard of ARACHNE and the other will use RIGEL to verify the quality of incoming data.
 

2. User Accounts and Security Policies

The non privileged user account for both ARACHNE and RIGEL is:

The current password should be posted on the monitors of ARACHNE and RIGEL. It is our goal to make these account/passwords universal on these computers for all functions requiring secure access.

Any function requiring the administrator or root password will be handled by local support staff. Other than this we have left our security in a relatively lax state for the convenience of the visitors, however any uninvited system configuration or modification (other than ordinary cosmetic preference settings) are not permitted. This includes the installation of software packages by anyone other than qualified Carnegie staff.
 

3. Logging on and System Startup

One first logs into RIGEL with the above account and creates a directory to store the observational data. Rigel has one shared data volume called /Volumes/Data_Rigel. For example:

Using subdirectory names based on the date will help the staff and subsequent users keep the disks organized and safe.

Next, log on to ARACHNE with the wfirc account and start the control system by double clicking the camera icon. Within a few seconds the Database Initialization window (Fig. 3.1) will appear.

All the systems shown in Fig. 3.1 should be set to online. You can optionally enter an observer name. Then click on OK. A few seconds later, the Camera Control Window should appear on the screen in the upper left hand corner.

In the Camera Control window, go to the Modules pull-down menu (Fig. 3.2) and start up the following windows:

After opening the GUIs described above do the following immediately:

If you just logged on or re-started the system turn on the Heater in the Temperature Controller. Set point should be 258 K. It will take about 10 minutes for the temperature to reach that value. The piezos won't really work before that.

Check the temperatures of the relevant channels (see section 7).

Next, the Readmode should be set to "Double" in the Camera Control window. The other options (Single, Bias, and Reset) are used only for testing and/or engineering.

Finally, go to the Options pull-down menu in the Camera Control window and click on DataPath. In the Path Parameter box which appears on the screen, enter the data path as in the example below:

Follow the above syntax for the path name carefully. Images are stored on RIGEL in a multipart format: the prefix "irx", followed by an image number, followed by the chip number, followed by the loop number, followed by a ".fits" extension. The first four parts of the filename are separated by an underscore. For example:

4. The Telescope Control Module

Three tools -- SkyMap, Airmass, and Object List -- are accessible by clicking on the File pull-down menu of the Telescope Control Module.

4.1 SkyMap Tool

SkyMap displays the current position of the telescope on the sky along with the positions, magnitudes, and spectral types of stars from one of three catalogs: the HST GSC (default), the GSC+ (the GSC augmented by stars from the USNO A2 catalog) and SAO catalogs. These catalogs can be selected via the File pull-down menu. The size of each star is proportional to the apparent magnitude, and its color reflects the spectral type (black means that the spectral type is unknown). In this window, a single click with the left mouse button gives the catalog number, spectral type (if available), and apparent V magnitude of the star. Under the Parameters pull-down menu, Mag. Limit sets the limiting magnitude of the catalog stars plotted on the map. The four boxes drawn in dashed lines show the positions of the four arrays on the sky. To display the area accessible to the guider use the Parameters pull-down menu and select "Show Guider". Note that the "Zoom" command in the Parameters menu, the percentage refers to the area mapped -- e.g., 200% means that the area displayed in the map is doubled. Control of the guider is discussed in section 5.

4.2 Airmass Tool

The Airmass tool graphically displays the airmass as a function of U.T. for the telescope coordinates displayed in the Telescope Control Module. The red dot shows the current airmass, and the blue line indicates how this will evolve with time. Note that airmasses above a value of 3 are not plotted (for good reason!). Changing the coordinates in the Telescope Control window will cause the airmass graph to be immediately updated. The time axis can be shortened or lengthened by clicking on the arrow keys in the Airmass Tool window.

4.3 Object List Tool

The Object List tool allows the observer to send positions directly from stored catalogs to the telescope control computer. On the File pull-down menu, the Load option brings up a list of the catalogs currently stored in C:/WFIRC/OBJECTS. Object catalogs are ascii files and can be created in advance of an observing run (see Appendix A) or input one object at a time using the popup windows spawned by the Add button. Once an object is highlighted with a single click of the left mouse button, the SendTo button sends the coordinates to the telescope control system (TCS) computer. The coordinates appear on the TCS screen just below the guider display and the Object Name will appear in the Camera Control Window. The night assistant will then use these coordinates to slew to the new position.

4.4 Controlling the Telescope

The telescope can be driven directly by the observer over small offsets, and indirectly over larger slews, using the Telescope Control GUI. The Get button reads the telescope coordinates and displays them in the coordinate windows. The equinox of the displayed coordinates can be set to 1950, 2000, or the current date. Note that this setting affects only the displayed coordinates. The Get button also updates the SkyMap tool to the current telescope coordinates. It is important to remember that if the telescope is moved by hand (i.e., it is not offset directly from ARACHNE), neither the SkyMap tool nor the telescope coordinates in the Telescope Control window are updated automatically. SkyMap always displays the map corresponding to the last Get request, SendTo command, or direct offset from ARACHNE. The Preview button will send the selected coordinates to the Telescope Control and Airmass GUIs but will not send them to the TCS or update the object name in the Camera Control GUI. This command is useful for examing the field and airmass for your next target.

To move to an object, either select it from the Object List and click SendTo or type the object's coordinates in to the coordinate boxes in the Telescope Control GUI and click the Send button. This sends coordinates to the TCS. These coordinates are then displayed below the guider display on the TCS screen. The night assistant will use the displayed coordinates to slew the telescope.

The directional buttons on the lower half of the telescope control window allow the observer to offset the telescope directly. The offsets are carried out in SET mode and require no intervention by the night assistant. If you hit the north button, for example, the telescope moves north by the number of arcseconds listed in the dy box. The dx box controls the magnitude of right ascention offsets, also in arcseconds. The S(dx) and S(dy) boxes display the total accumulated offsets since the last click on the Zero button. If you are dithering around a central position, it is a good idea to zero these accumulated offsets when the telescope first arrives at the central position. If anything goes wrong during the dithering sequence, these accumulated offsets allow you to figure out where you were in the sequence. The 0,0 button sends the telescope back to the (0,0) position -- i.e., it offsets the telescope by -S(dx) and -S(dy). The accumlated offsets are also set to 0 when you click the SendTo button in the Object List.
 

5. Using the Dichroic-Guider

A dichroic mirror within the camera sends optical light to an intensified-CCD camera that processes star images for fast guiding. Guide stars are pointed at by the Dichroic module and imaged/processed by the Guider camera module. The guider camera can access a total field of 9'x9', which is always centered on the telescope coordinates. The field of the guider camera is much smaller, 95"x126". Through tilts of the dichroic mirror, the small field is moved around and can be pointed anywhere within the large field under control of the Dichroic module.

5.1 The Dichroic Window

Figure 5.1.1 shows the Dichroic window. This is a close-up of the Sky Map with the four detectors outlined in red. The small rectangular blue box shows the current field of the Guider camera. This rectangle can move within the field as the dichroic is positioned (by the two motors on the outside of the blue-box)

The rectangle can be moved manually in RA and DEC by entering relative moves (in arcsec) and using the North, South, East and West buttons. The rectangle can also be moved by clicking on one of the stars in the field and using the Move button.

5.2 The Guider

If you are ready to start your night, open the Guider window from the Camera Control window (Modules) (see Figure 3.2). Make sure that the TV camera is turned ON.

After Zero Pointing the telescope (see Section 6.2) and with the bright star in the center of the field, look for it on the Guider display. If it doesn't appear in the display, look in the neighborhood with the EW and NS buttons in the dichroic window. Once you have found the bright star and more or less centered in in the display of the guider, use the Reset command in the dichroic window, under File. This will locate the center of the guiding field for the dichroic. From then on, you will be able to click for guide stars or run a Macro that uses the guider.

The Guider window has several pull-down menus but they are not very relevant to the observer. Focusing the guider camera requires physically moving the camera on the Blue Box (ask the technical crew for assistance). We have found that it is better to guide on relatively faint guide stars (m > 12); the auto-select guide program will try to pick those stars.

Because there is a focus offset between Ks and Hc (see section 6.1), the guider image will be sharper if the Xybion camera is offset in focus by a corresponding amount. The sense of the change is as follows:

Suppose the Ks telescope (MACS) focus is 4760, and that the Xybion is in good focus. With the Hc filter in, the MACS focus number wants to be decreased by 15 units, to 4745. Go out to the Xybion micrometer and turn it one complete turn clockwise. That will bring it back into focus. Note that:

5.3 Manual Guide Star Selection/Commence Guiding

In the Dichroic-Control GUI, left-mouse click on the desired star and then click the Move button. E-W and N-S motions of the guider field can also be entered and executed. From the Guider menu in the Guider window, select the Select Star option. Clicking on the star should then move the white guider box to the star. To begin guiding, press the Guider ON/OFF toggle button. A small red circle around the star will appear; it indicates that the guider is operating.

6. Observing

6.1 Changing Filters

Filters are changed by selecting a filter in the Camera Control window. The list of filters presently available is:

The camera has a different focus for the Ks filter than for the Jc and Hc filters. The "gauge" and "targ" values in the TCS display should be increased by 15 units for Ks.

Warning: Do not under any circumstances operate the filter wheel when the dewar is cooling down or warming up. The detector should be below 85 K.

6.2 Zero Pointing the Telescope

At the beginning of the night, ask the night assistant to slew the telescope to the position of an SAO star, or a star fainter than 5th magnitude (the Persson et al. IR standards work well for this). Offset from the field center to the center of chip 1 (set dx=dy=191 in the Telescope GUI, and click on the SE button). Next take a 3 - 5 second exposure. To do this, go to the Camera Control window, set Exptime to 3, Loops to 1, Chip to 1, and then click on the Go button. When the exposure terminates, display the image using the Display GUI (see section 6.5). Check the location of the star in the chip, and center it (if necessary) by offseting the telescope. Take a second exposure to ensure that the star is now centered in chip 1, then offset the telescope back to the field center (set dx=dy=191 in the Telescope GUI, and click on the NW button). Ask the night assistant to do a "CSET" on the TCS at this position. This procedure should not need to be repeated for the rest of the night.

6.3 Focusing

Make sure that the night assistant has done an "GSET" on the TCS (once at the beginning of the night is sufficient). Next use the SkyMap tool to find a 11th mag star (a standard is ok) near your object location to use for focusing the telescope. Place the star near the center of chip 1, and set the telescope focus to 30 units above your best guess for the focus (see the TCS monitor for the predicted focus). Set Exptime to 10, Loops to 1, Chip to 1 in the Camera Control Window, and take a series of exposures by clicking on the Go button. Decrease the focus by 5 units after each exposure until reaching a focus value 30 units below the best-guess focus. Examine the widths of the stellar profiles in each of the resulting images using the imexam task in IRAF. Contour plots are often the most effective focus tool. The telescope has a non-negligible astigmatism and one can see the image shape rotate 90 degress as you go through the focus. Set the telescope focus to the best value, and ask the night assistant to do an "FSET" in the TCS. Make sure that the night assistant periodically updates the focus to match the predicted value. It is a surprisingly accurate predictor of focus changes with zenith distance and temperature. It provides an excellent first guess for focusing at the start of subsequent nights.

6.4 Creating and Running Dithering and Mosaicing Macros

The Macro utility on the Camera Control window allows the observer to create automatic dithering and mosaicing sequences. "Dithers" refer to the small (10"-15") offsets around a single pointing of the four arrays; "mosaics" refer to the large (190") offsets required to fill in the gaps between the arrays. To create a 13' x 13' filled image, the standard observing sequence includes several small dithers around each of four pointings required to fill the gaps.

To create a macro, click either the Mos or Std buttons on the Camera Control GUI. The Mos button should be used for observations requiring both "dithers" and "mosaics"; the Std button is intended for observations which only require "dithers" (such as for Standard Stars). A Macro Definition window will appear, allowing details of the dither/mosaic sequence to be entered.

For the Mos option, there are three basic choices to be made:

The Mosaic-Pattern pull-down menu in the Macro Definition window gives choices of canned mosaicing schemes. If any of the schemes other than none-1 is selected, the magnitude of the offset between mosaic positions is given by Mosaic-Step. If none-1 is selected, there will be no large offsets to fill in the gaps.

Similarly, the Dither-Pattern pull-down gives different options for the dither pattern. In this case, Dither-Step provides the size of the small dithers.

The Guider/Dichroic box has three choices. None selects no guiding. If auto is selected, the guider will offset automatically to compensate for the telescope offset. The last choice is manual. This option prompts the observer to shift the guider manually before beginning the next exposure.

The Macro Definition window which appears when the Std button is selected is similar to that for the Mos button. Here, however, the options that must be defined are the chips to be read (selected by the Chip pull-down menu), the Dither-Step), and the Dither Pattern.

Once the parameters in the Macro Definition window have been defined, click on the OK button. Next, go back to the Camera Control window and set the Exptime, Objtype, Filter, and Loops parameters. (Due to intermittent noise problems which have not yet been fixed as of 1 March 2002, currently recommended exposure times are 120 sec in Jc, 90 sec in Hc, and 60 sec in Ks.) The Filename should be set to "1" (or any other number you like) at the beginning of the run, and will increment automatically whenever a new exposure is taken.

Note: Generally speaking, It's not a good idea to re-set the file number at a later time because the system will overwrite existing files without warning.

Finally, to initiate the macro, click on the Execute button near the bottom of the Camera Control window. The macro execution can be followed by clicking on the Macro-Progress option in the Options pull-down menu of the Camera Control window. When the macro terminates, the observer will be prompted by several beeps. The green boxes shown in the SkyMap will reflect both the dither and Mosaic movements. The Clear SavePos option in the Options pull-down menu allows you to erase previous positions.

6.5 Displaying Images

The Display GUI on ARACHNE can be used to display images automatically as they are taken, or as the user selects them. This window also provides crude sky subtraction and image statistics. Images are loaded by clicking on Load Image in the File pull-down menu. The options possible are:

The chip to be displayed is easily changed by setting the Chip option in the Display tool window.

The Display tool can be set up to automatically load the next image taken by clicking on Autoload in the Options menu. Another useful option in the Options menu is Size, which allows the image to be displayed either as 256x256 or 512x512 pixels on the ARACHNE desktop.

To see an image with the sky subtracted, the image to be used for sky subtraction must first be selected by clicking on Load Sky in the File pull-down. Then click on the Sky Subtract box in the Display tool window to toggle on sky subtraction for the subsequent images displayed.
The first time this feature is used one must use Select or Last to load a sky file. Previous and Next do not work because there is no current sky file.

Finally, the Display GUI can be used to carry out simple image statistics. Pressing the left mouse button on any point in the image will display the XY coordinates and value of that pixel in the pixel,value box. The radius of a circle for calculating statistics can be be adjusted by clicking on the Radius arrow keys. Pressing the left mouse button at any point in the image will display in the MinMax and AvDev boxes, respectively, the minimum and maximum pixel values, and the average and standard deviation of the pixels within this radius.

Note that images may be also be easily viewed with IRAF on RIGEL using the imexam task. This is the preferred method for more extensive examination of the data than is possible using the Display tool on ARACHNE.

6.6 Quick-Look Tools in IRAF

There are a number of simple IRAF scripts that will help you get a feeling for how good your data are. Typing "wfirc_observe" in the Rigel IRAF window will load a set of scripts. These are:

dis frame# chip# loop# Displays irx_frame#_chip_loop# into buffer 1 in Ximtool. Saves you having to type "irx" and all those under scores all the time.
dp frame#1 frame#2 chip# loop# Takes the difference between frames #1 and #2 for Chip# and loop#, displays the difference and brings up the imexamine task. This is a usefull way of keeping track of the seeing, focus and dithering progress.
avgo frame#1 frame#2 chip Combines the loops for frames #1 and #2 and then differences and displays, as above. Helps you to see a little deeper.

6.7 Flat Fields, Darks and Masks

If you want to do precision photometry you should use either dome flats or twilight flats. The Hawaii arrays have significant fringing and these are additive effects. A dark-sky median flat will remove these features cosmetically but induce photometric errors. Properly flattend data will show the fringes quite clearly, but they will come out with proper sky subtraction. It is best to take your dome flats at the end of the night when it is still reasonably dark in the dome. (In the evening you should have the dome open as soon as possible to reach thermal equilibrium). Ask the night assistant or a member of the technical support staff to open the primary mirror cover and point the telescope to the (closed) dome with the H.A. set to 3 hr W. Turn on the flat field lamp from the lowest of the control panels in the rack which also contains the UT/ST clocks. Exceeding the MAX 500 voltage will burn out the bulbs. The following lamp levels should yield ~8000 counts for a 10-second exposure:

Take a 15-loop (minimum) sequence of exposures in each filter to be used. It is recommended that an equal number of flat exposures be taken in each filter with the lamp turned off to remove the thermal emission from the dome, dark-current, bias residuals etc.

Dark exposures are generally not needed. The dark rates for all of the chips are entirely negligible. Taking your flats as the difference of lamp "on" and "off" exposures will remove the dark from them (also negligible).

The dome flats or medianed dark sky frames can be used to construct bad pixel masks, if needed.

6.8 Data Management

The following table gives typical numbers for the amount of data that WIRC will generate for different types of observations:

N (typical) in this table is a typical number of such tiles, standards, and flats per night, with a 60-second exposure time for the tile data. Allowing for test and focus frames, it is easy to accumulate 5 Gbyte per night, with this number rising toward 10 Gbyte for 30-second, rather than 60-second, exposures for the science object data frames.

Note that DDS3 DAT tapes hold 15 Gbyte, so put no more than two nights' worth of data (for the example in the table) on a tape. Rigel can also create single layer DVD's (any type of single layer DVD, although the observatory stocks mainly DVD-R media) which hold 4.38 GB of data each. See section 8 for instructions on how to use the DAT and DVD drives.
 

7. Temperature Monitors

The camera temperature monitor (the "Thermometer" GUI) and the M2 temperature contoller ("Temp. Control" GUI) do not need close attention. The only relevant monitor channels are #6, #7, and #8, whose readings should stay around the values in the following table. If any of these wander up in temperature by more than a degree K, inform the night assistant and/or day crew.

Likewise, the M2 temperature controller value should stay close to 258K. The Control SetPoint, Heater, and Tune parameters should NOT be changed.

There is a useful graph that can be kept in the background to check temperatures of the WIRC.

8. Saving Data to Tape or DVD

8.1 Tape Storage

A DDS4 DAT drive is available on RIGEL for writing each night's data to tape. (Note: This drive will read DDS3, DDS2, and DDS1 90 meter tapes; it will not read DDS-1 60 meter tapes. Users should bring their own DDS4 tapes, as none are available at the Observatory.) To use this drive, load a tape and run the following commands from a terminal window on RIGEL.

Now suppose you want to append data from night 2 to the same tape. This procedure requires caution because it is very easy to erase your data if you make a mistake!

8.2 DVD Storage

Before burning DVD's the user may need to split his/her data into different subdirectories of less than 4.38 GB total capacity each as this is the capacity limit For maximum storage efficiency and convenience it is recommended that the observer store his data files in a compressed tar archive before writing them to DVD. An example of how to do this follows. It is not necessary to be root to write DVD's with the procedure given here. Carefully note that there are two device names in play here, /dev/dvdrecorder and /media/dvdrecorder:

The growisofs command above has many options available to those who wish to explore its capabilities. For more information on these type:

mkiosfs -help

Be advised that before burning DVD's using the above procedure, the user may need to split his/her data into different subdirectories of less than 4.38 GB total capacity each as this is the capacity limit of a single formatted DVD. This is easily and rapidly accomplished using the linux mv command and carefully selected wildcard file name specifiers. On an excellent night the system will sometimes produce enough data for three DVD's.


 

8.3 Accessing Rigel Shares From a Laptop Directly

The observational data on Rigel is available as a Samba share (SMB protocol share) and as such can be mounted directly by any SMB client. This means that visitors with laptops can have direct access to their data so as to manipulate or copy it to their own disks as desired. Check with the documentation for your particular operating system to see how to mount and access SMB shares. The methods for this are many and varied and depend on the particular OS and client software, but a few examples are described below.

For a generic Linux computers, the smbmount command is one convenient way to mount a share. For example the following commands would be executed on the visitors laptop:

cd move to your home directory
mkdir rigel_data create a mount point
su become super user (enter your root password)
smbmount //rigel/data3 ~rigel_data mount the data3 share on rigel as a subdir of your home directory

Other methods of accessing the Rigel shares are with GUI tools such as the Computer desktop icon found on the default Gnome desktop of Fedora 3. To access the Samba share data3 with this tool do Computer->File-> Connect to Server. Then set Server Type to Windows Share, and Server to rigel. After entering login credentials (use the WFIRC Rigel account, one is presented with a browsable file window.

One may even use a Web Browser such as FireFox to browse and manipulate files in SMB shares. In the address box just enter smb://rigel. Drag and drop files after navigating through data3 or download them by right clicking for options. Still other methods for accessing the Rigel shares are available such as smbclient, a utility analogous to ftp.

If you are using Windows XP on your laptop, type Start->Run... and in the pop-up box type \\rigel. After authenicating, this will open a window whereby you can navigate all Rigel shares, drag and drop files, copy files, etc. Other methods are possible such as with the Windows Explorer whereby one can navigate to the Network Neighborhood and find Rigel shares in the IRCAM workgroup.

Caution should be exercised when modifying data on Rigel shares as it is the first and original copy of the raw data. Also, remember that using all the above methods will require authentication using the WFIRC account credentials.

9. Typical Performance

9.1 Gain/Saturation/Linearity

The gain of the system appears to be ~1.6 electrons/ADU. Saturation level is approximately 48,000 DN or ~80,000 electrons. The linearity of the detectors was measured by R. Marzke in April of 2000. Departures from linearity were found to be less than 1% for signal levels below 30,000 DN. A linearity curve can be obtained from E. Persson or P. McCarthy. It might be wise practice to keep sky levels below 28,000 DN or so. If you need dynamic range, lower sky levels are better.

9.2 Throughput

The following table gives throughput measurements for different filters. A typical H-band zero point is 1 DN/sec = 24 magnitudes.

9.4 Observing Efficiency

The new camera control software and electronics have significantly decreased the observing overhead. The following table gives measurements made in August and September 2000 for observations with "dithers" and "mosaics":

10. Troubleshooting

The first step is to make sure all the electronics are correctly powered up and functioning at the hardware level. Please contact observer support assistance in this regard.

If data acquisition is failing check the following:

Some specific problems that might occur are as follows:

Symptom: Module 'x' "freezes" (ie. does not react to the mouse or keyboard)

Solution:

Symptom: Data acquisition fails -- i.e., an error message like "timeout from Win98" appears. (The Win98 system is PALAS, which is the computer in the rack in the dome)

Appendix A: Preparing Object Lists

Observers may want to create object lists in advance of their runs for use with the Object List Tool. These are simple ascii files with one line per object. The specific format for each line is:

where the RA and DEC are expressed as hh:mm:ss.ss and dd:mm:ss.s, respectively. The COMMENTS field is optional. A typical list might look as follows: Use FTP to transfer the list to ARACHNE. Click on the Start button in the Windows NT task bar at the lower left-hand corner of the screen of ARACHNE. Next click on Run, which will open a window. Type "ftp" in the Open: box and then click on the OK button to initiate an FTP session. This should go something like the following:

ftp> lcd wfirc\objects This is where to put the list file on ARACHNE
ftp> open canopus (or the computer where your prepared the list file)
ftp> cd mydir Go to the directory where the list is
ftp> get sne.txt sne.objects (make sure the file has the extension ".objects")
ftp> quit  

At this point, bring up the Object List Tool and follow the instructions in Section 4.3 for accessing the object list.



Appendix B: Throughput Models

The optical transmission for all elements in the optical path as well as the final product (total system transmission) are given by the following tables. The total system transmission at the wavelengths (nm) in column 1 is given by the product of the coefficients in (or in some cases derived from) columns 2-10. A detailed description of each table column follows:


Column 1 (nm) - Wavelength in nanometers

Column 2 (atm) - Average atmospheric transmission

Column 3 (primary) - Transmission of telescope mirrors derived from this column. The combined transmission of the telescope mirrors used in the total throughput calculation is the value given in this column squared and then multiplied by 0.97. This estimates the combined reflectivity of both telescope mirrors with a loss contribution for dust (0.97).

Column 4 (window) - Transmission of camera entry window

Column 5 (M0) - Camera internal flat mirror reflectivity

Column 6 (M1) - Estimated transmission of the three mirror camera design. The actual factor is calculated by taking the value in this column, the measured reflectivity of Offner mirror M1, cubing it and applying further factors of 0.95, and 0.985 to account mirror for the losses induced by the pupil mask sizing and hole in M3, respectively.

Column 7 (dich.) - Camera dichroic transmission

Column 8 (corrector) - The transmission of the two element (4 optical surface) field corrector is calculated from the data in this column. This data represents the transmission measured for a single corrector surface element (actually a witness sample in the same coating batch). The actual factor is the value in this column raised to the 4'th power.

Column 9 (filter) Camera filter transmission at 77 Kelvin.

Column 10 (det.) - Nominal HAWAII detector quantum efficiency

Column 11 (system) - Total system transmission
